I can breathe!

It's the end of the day and I'm quickly writing this because I'll be watching the fireworks tonight. I'm really excited and I'm hoping we get a good spot. Anyways, I felt like I reached the halfway point today. We took our midterm in Freedom and Justice, which might I say, many of us overstudied for. It was really easy and straightforward. I'm hoping I was able to get a good grade on it. Now, I have to read some more and still have fun at the same time!

Lucina,

I am very proud of you and the other three girls for your incredible dedication and focus. I was confident that you would all study and give your very best. Remember the class still has a paper and a final, but the hard part is now over. Plato and Locke are a handful. Now you get to have some fun and deal with Women;s rights and Civil Rights.

The areas that you are about to study have had a profound impact on Ms. Kronenberg and I and I want you to pay special attention to the conversation. One area that I have found to be missing in Kramnick's lectures and works is an absence of conversation around isssues that affect the Latino Community. I have seen nothing in his conversation that deals with the issues of immigration, labor laws and the rights of Children to get an education post high school if they are in this country as an undocumented resident.

Please probe this issue and see if he has any sensitivity to the subject. Why only discuss issues around white women and their struggle and African-American's and Civil Rights. Why not include more conversation about the issues that will be talked about in the Presidential Campaign. This is not to say that those issues around blacks and women are not important but all issues should be discussed.

He talks about Marx and the rights of workesr and the Labor Movement. Kramnick discusses issues about denial of civil rights and how women are left without opportunity.

So, all of you should open up the dialogue especially since you come from a state where illegal immigration is such a hot button item. I want you to make everyone thing and hear about what it is like to live in West Contra Costa.

Did you know that one of the students who was scheduled to be part of the Ivy League Connection could not participate because he was undocumented! I mean we went through a lot and it really showed us how even smart students are left without resources because they do not have a green card or that their tourist visa has expired. We also know that it can take a very long time to get citizenship and the Mexican government is notorious for taking a long time to issue papers.

So, I am glad that the midterm was doable, but I want you to go in the TA sections and open the discussion around controversial issues. This is the time.

Also good luck with your movie review being published in the paper. I definitely want to read it. So please email it as a link or a PDF.

Keep up the good work.

Lucina,

It's always a good sign to hear the word "overstudied" from a student. I'm happy to learn you put in the effort. I would love it if you took Mr. Ramsey's advice and brought up the Immigration issue as an adjunct to the Civil Rights discussion about Women's Rights and African-American Rights. This is an opportunity to apply principles to contemporary issues -- and understand in the process the conflicts we all feel. It's a complicated issue that Professor Kramnick should have some insights on.

Let us know what happens. Great job.
